WSJ links publisher's resignation to sales deal (AP)

LONDON ? The Wall Street Journal says its publisher in Europe resigned after an internal investigation determined that he had tried to influence editorial content to favor a partner in a cut-price circulation deal.

The report in Thursday's European edition appeared to differ from a statement by its owner, News Corp. subsidiary Dow Jones, that Tuesday's resignation of publisher Andrew Langhoff was unrelated to a circulation deal with the Netherlands-based Executive Learning Partnerships.

The Journal, quoting what it called people familiar with the matter, said ELP paid 1 euro cent (1.3 U.S. cents) each for 12,000 copies of the paper daily, a big slice of its European circulation of 75,000. The paper retails for 1.50 pounds ($2.35, euro1.71).

Christians clash with Egypt police for second day

Several hundred Christians pelted police with rocks outside a Cairo hospital Monday in fresh clashes the day after 24 people died in riots that grew out of a Christian protest against a church attack.

Sunday's sectarian violence was the worst in Egypt since the uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak in February.

Egyptian Prime Minister Essam Sharaf warned in a televised address that the riots were a setback on the country's already fraught transition to civilian rule after three decades of Mubarak's authoritarian government.

"These events have taken us back several steps," Sharaf said.

He blamed foreign meddling for the troubles, claiming it was part of a "dirty conspiracy."

Similar explanations for the troubles in Egypt are often heard from the military rulers who took power from Mubarak, perhaps at attempt to deflect accusations that they are bungling the management of the country.

"Instead of moving forward to build a modern state on democratic principles, we are back to seeking stability and searching for hidden hands ? domestic and foreign ? that meddle with the country's security and safety," Sharaf said.

Voting in the first election since Mubarak was ousted starts on Nov. 28 with candidates due to begin registering during the week starting Wednesday.

The Coptic Church, which has a significant following in Egypt, called for Copts to observe a worldwide, three-day fast beginning Tuesday, and also urged the authorities to look into the underlying causes of the protests, the al-Jazeera news network reported.

Story: Christians in Egypt fear Islamist pressure

The clashes Sunday night raged over a large section of downtown Cairo and drew in Christians, Muslims and security forces.

Christians took to the streets after blaming Muslim radicals for partially demolishing a church in Aswan province last week. They also demanded the sacking of the province's governor for failing to protect the building.

Army vehicle hit Christians
The violence began when about 1,000 Christian protesters tried to stage a sit-in outside the state television building along the Nile in downtown Cairo.

The protesters said they were attacked by "thugs" with sticks and the violence then spiraled out of control after a speeding military vehicle jumped up onto a sidewalk and rammed into some of the Christians.

Most of the 24 people killed were Coptic Christians, though officials said at least three soldiers were among the dead. Nearly 300 people were injured.

The army imposed a curfew on Cairo's Tahrir Square, the focus for protests that brought down Mubarak, and the downtown area. It was set from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. local time.

Pictures of smashed faces and dead bodies of what activists said were bodies run over by military vehicles circulated online, with angry comments comparing the violence used by the military to that of Mubarak's hated police in the uprising.

"What happened today is unprecedented in Egypt. 17 corpses crushed by military tanks," Hossam Bahgat, human rights activist tweeted from hospital. "I saw bodies missing hands and legs, heads twisted away or plastered to the ground."

The latest clashes Monday broke out outside the Coptic hospital where many of the Christian victims were taken the night before.

The screams of grieving women rang out from inside the hospital and some of the hundreds of men gathered outside held wooden crosses. Empty coffins were lined up outside the hospital.

There were no word on casualties from Monday's clashes.

'Betrayal, a conspiracy, murder'
The fighting added to growing frustration among activists. Many Egyptians suspect the army wants to keep hold of the reins of power from behind the scenes even as it hands over day-to-day government. The army denies this.

"This is a dark day in the military's history. This is betrayal, a conspiracy, murder," Magdy el-Serafy wrote on Twitter where he and other Egyptians voiced frustration at the army's handling of the protest.

Egypt's government cabinet called an emergency meeting for Monday, vowing the violence would not derail the election.

Christians, who make up about 10 percent of Egypt's 85 million people, blame the ruling military council for being too lenient on those behind a spate of anti-Christian attacks since Mubarak's ouster.

The chaotic power transition has left a security vacuum, and the Coptic Christian minority is particularly worried about a show of force by ultraconservative Islamists, known as Salafis.

The ruling military council led by Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, defense minister of 20 years under Mubarak's former regime, took over after the 18-day popular uprising forced Mubarak to step down.

The military initially pledged to hand back power to a civilian administration in six months, but that deadline has passed, with parliamentary elections now scheduled to start on Nov. 28.

According to a timetable floated by the generals, presidential elections could be held late next year.

How To Improve Customer Service With Cultural Sensitivity Training

HTML Ready Article. Click on the "Copy" button to copy into your clipboard.

By: Bill Walsh

Give all of your customers world class service by implementing cultural sensitivity training.

Your customers deserve the best customer service on the planet. After all, regardless of what kind of business you operate, your clientele is liable to take their business elsewhere if they feel they can receive better service. In today's marketplace, this often necessitates implementing some form of cultural sensitivity training.

No doubt you spend a lot of your time trying to figure out how to improve customer service. You wouldn't survive in business if you didn't. The last thing anyone can afford in today's economy (or any economy, really) is to allow employees to drive paying customers away.

Many business owners would be surprised if they knew just how many cultural sensitivity violations occur right in their place of business, both between employees and from employees to customers. Cultural sensitivity training helps show you and your employees how to improve customer service by addressing these kinds of concerns in your place of business:

Racism and prejudice:
The work place is no place for racial slurs, ever. Arguably, there is no appropriate place for language which demeans another person based on ethnicity. Beyond a doubt, it doesn't belong in front of your customers.

Sexism:
Customers deserve to be treated with respect, but all too often women (and in some cases men) are treated as though they are unequal, even when they are paying customers. By implementing cultural sensitivity training, employers are able to help employees understand how they are expected to interact with members of the opposite gender. One reason to address this is to make sure that customers all receive the best customer service possible, regardless of their gender.

Language:
Barriers While cultural sensitivity training isn't going to help your employees to speak or understand a foreign language, it will help them to have patience with clients or customers who may not have a full grasp of our language. You may be pleasantly surprised to find that when you give an international client the best customer service despite language and cultural differences, you are likely to have won a customer for life.

Sexual Orientation:
These days, sexual orientation is a hot button issue, and many people have very strong feelings one way or the other about it. It is increasingly important for employees to understand how to improve customer service to all people, including those who may be of a different sexual orientation.

Harassment:
These days, failing to provide cultural sensitivity training for your employees can cost you more than a customer. If your employees harass a customer or fellow employee, you could find your business facing a lawsuit. It is important for all employees to understand cultural sensitivity. Not only will it help them understand how to improve customer service, but it can help curb harassment complaints.

The next time you consider how to improve customer service for today's diverse customer base, start by considering implementing cultural sensitivity training. After all, your customers deserve the best customer service. All of your customers.

In this week's PLoS Medicine, Philip Campbell Hill of the University of Otago, New Zealand and colleagues propose a new approach to help better manage child contacts of adult TB cases, using a health needs assessment framework, research tools, and a strategy for clinical evaluation. They show how the approach could be applied and evaluated by National TB Control Programs, to ensure that its solutions are sustainable.

The authors say: "We envisage that this approach will help close the gap between policy and practice in TB control in children. As such, it will contribute to the achievement of Millennium Development Goal number four, to reduce child mortality. In addition, it will help reduce the reservoir of M. tuberculosis in the community, which is necessary for TB elimination."

Living in Dryden: Campaign finance mysteries

Campaign finance mysteries

In campaign season (and out), the New York State Board of Elections financial disclosure pages for Dryden are interesting. Last Friday was a deadline for a filing 32 days before the November 8th election, and I see two mysteries:

  • The Dryden Republicans haven't yet filed that 32-day disclosure. (In their July filing, they had $6997 on hand.)

  • Bruno Schickel seems to be at -$1,364.72. He raised $675, and spent $2039.72.

The "locally grown" Schickel's donations include $250 each from local truckers Dennis and Nathan Mix, and $175 from four people outside of Dryden.

You can also find the Dryden Democrats' reports there: receipts of $6714, expenses of $2295, and a closing balance of $5796..

Casey Anthony Deposed, Pleads the Fifth in Zanny the Nanny Lawsuit

Disguised and appearing via video link, Casey Anthony was deposed Saturday morning in a defamation suit filed against her by Zenaida Fernandez Gonzalez.

Gonzalez claims she is unemployed and ostracized because Anthony originally told police that a woman with the same name kidnapped her daughter, Caylee.

Investigators proved that Gonzalez had nothing whatsoever to do with the case and that Casey fabricated Zanny the Nanny, but the damage was done.

So claims Gonzalez, who is suing her for defamation.

Casey A.

In this weekend's deposition, Casey Anthony answered few questions and her attorney repeatedly invoked her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination.

Attorney John Morgan, who represents Gonzalez, said Casey wore a Philadelphia Philllies cap, "gigantic sunglasses" and what appeared to be a long, dark wig.

"She clearly did not want to be there," Morgan said in response to a question about the acquitted murder suspect's mood, but was "composed" and "courteous."

Casey Anthony's location was not revealed.

Anthony answered general questions, such as whether she was present during her trial and whether she was in court for her attorney's opening statement.

But more specific questions, predictably, were shut down and met with the Fifth Amendment assertion by Casey's Orlando-based attorney, Charles Greene.

"Deep breathing, nostrils flaring," Morgan said of her demeanor. The questioning lasted about 45 minutes. "We didn't want to turn this into a 2-hour circus."

"We asked enough questions and got her to invoke the Fifth enough times that we feel we can file a motion to a judge to compel her to answer [more]."

"We didn't want to go bit by bit through [all the Anthony case details such as] the trunk and the chloroform; that would have served no purpose."

Morgan plans to file said motion in the next week.

She is in Florida serving probation in a check fraud case. Other than that, little is known about Anthony's whereabouts, or what she's been up to lately.

We know she's not working or in school.

Feds target Calif. pot dispensaries for closure (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Federal prosecutors have launched a crackdown on some pot dispensaries in California, warning the stores that they must shut down in 45 days or face criminal charges and confiscation of their property even if they are operating legally under the state's 15-year-old medical marijuana law.

In an escalation of the ongoing conflict between the U.S. government and the nation's burgeoning medical marijuana industry, at least 16 pot shops or their landlords received letters this week stating they are violating federal drug laws, even though medical marijuana is legal in California. The state's four U.S. attorneys were scheduled Friday to announce a broader coordinated crackdown.

Their offices refused Thursday to confirm the closure orders. The Associated Press obtained copies of the letters that a prosecutor sent to at least 12 San Diego dispensaries. They state that federal law "takes precedence over state law and applies regardless of the particular uses for which a dispensary is selling and distributing marijuana."

"Under United States law, a dispensary's operations involving sales and distribution of marijuana are illegal and subject to criminal prosecution and civil enforcement actions," according to the letters signed by U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy in San Diego. "Real and personal property involved in such operations are subject to seizure by and forfeiture to the United States ... regardless of the purported purpose of the dispensary."

The move comes a little more than two months after the Obama administration toughened its stand on medical marijuana. For two years before that, federal officials had indicated they would not move aggressively against dispensaries in compliance with laws in the 16 states where pot is legal for people with doctors' recommendations.

The Department of Justice issued a policy memo to federal prosecutors in late June stating that marijuana dispensaries and licensed growers in states with medical marijuana laws could face prosecution for violating federal drug and money-laundering laws. The effort to shutter California dispensaries appeared to be the most far-reaching effort so far to put that guidance into action.

"This really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. The administration is simply making good on multiple threats issued since President Obama took office," said Kevin Sabet, a former adviser to the president's drug czar and a fellow at the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Substance Abuse Solutions. "The challenge is to balance the scarcity of law enforcement resources and the sanctity of this country's medication approval process. It seems like the administration is simply making good on multiple statements made previously to appropriately strike that balance."

Greg Anton, a lawyer who represents dispensary Marin Alliance for Medical Marijuana, said its landlord received an "extremely threatening" letter Wednesday invoking a federal law that imposes additional penalties for selling drugs within 1,000 feet of schools, parks and playgrounds.

The landlord was ordered to evict the 14-year-old pot club or risk imprisonment, plus forfeiture of the property and all the rent he has collected while the dispensary has been in business, Anton said.

Marin Alliance's founder "has been paying state and federal taxes for 14 years, and they have cashed all the checks," he said. "All I hear from Obama is whining about his budget, but he has money to do this which will actually reduce revenues."

Kris Hermes, a spokesman for the medical marijuana advocacy group Americans for Safe Access, said the warnings are part of what appears to be an attempt by the Obama administration to curb medical marijuana on multiple fronts and through multiple agencies. A series of dispensary raids in Montana, for example, involved agents from not only the FBI and U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, but the Internal Revenue Service and Environmental Protection Agency.

Going after property owners is not a new tactic though, Hermes said. Five years ago, the Department of Justice under President George W. Bush made similar threats to about 300 Los Angeles-area landlords who were renting space to medical marijuana outlets, some of whom were eventually evicted or closed their doors voluntarily, he said.

"It did have an impact. However, the federal government never acted on its threats, never prosecuted anybody, never even went to court to begin prosecutions," Hermes said. "By and large, they were empty threats, but they relied on them and the cost of postage to shut down as many facilities as they could without having to engage in criminal enforcement activity."

Besides the dozen dispensaries in San Diego and the one in Marin County, at least three shops in San Francisco already have received closure notices, said Dale Gieringer, director of the California chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.

The San Diego medical marijuana outlets put on notice were the same 12 that city officials sued last month for operating illegally, after activists there threatened to force an election on a zoning plan adopted to regulate the city's fast-growing medical marijuana industry, City Attorney Jan Goldsmith said. A judge on Wednesday ordered nine of the targeted shops to close, while the other three shut down voluntarily, Goldsmith said.

Duffy, the U.S. attorney for far Southern California, planned to issue warning letters to property owners and all of the 180 or so dispensaries that have proliferated in San Diego in the absence of compromise regulations, according to Goldsmith.

"The real power is with the federal government," he said. "They have the asset forfeiture, and that means either the federal government will own a lot of property or these landlords will evict a lot of dispensaries."
