Arsenal finally wins after Swansea GK's blunder

By ROB HARRIS

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:53 p.m. ET Sept. 10, 2011

LONDON (AP) -Andrei Arshavin gave Arsenal its first victory of the Premier League season on Saturday, exploiting Swansea's goalkeeping blunder to clinch a 1-0 win.

The Russia striker scored five minutes before halftime to bring an end to a six-match league run without a win stretching back into last season.

After collecting the ball, Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm tried to quickly clear it but his underarm throw from the right of the penalty area deflected off Angel Rangel's heel.

And the loose ball fell to Arshavin, who found the net from a tight angle.

"Confidence goes quickly and comes back slowly," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. "We are not used to the situation we have been in."

But the Gunners lacked the ruthlessness to build on that fortuitous goal in their first outing since an 8-2 humiliation at Manchester United before the international break.

"It was vital for us to win the game," Wenger said. "We started quite well, but slowly the nerves took over and we played handbrake-ish, restrictive in the second half."

That Old Trafford setback, which left Arsenal with just one point after three matches, was swiftly followed by Wenger making a raft of signings in the three days before the summer transfer window closed.

Wenger insists that the spree was not a frantic reaction to the loss, but based on pessimistic medical reports for midfielder Jack Wilshere and defender Thomas Vermaelen who are among several key players out injured.

All five newcomers made the bench, but only three featured on Saturday, with defender Per Mertesacker and midfielder Mikel Arteta starting, while Yossi Benayoun, on loan from Chelsea, later replaced Arshavin.

Arteta was seen as a direct replacement for the departed Cesc Fabregas and adeptly took the place of the former captain.

The former Everton midfielder nearly helped Arsenal make the perfect start after two minutes, slipping a perfect ball through to Aaron Ramsey but the Wales captain fired over.

"Arteta played very well, particularly in the first half," Wenger said. "You can see he will bring us some technical security that is needed."

Mertesacker had a tougher start to life in England, with Danny Graham getting in front of the Germany center back early on.

"He needs to adapt to the pace of the game," Wenger said of Mertesacker.

Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny had to be alert to turn Graham's seventh-minute shot around the post and prevent Swansea scoring its first goal since gaining promotion.

Arsenal nearly went in front, though, after 15 minutes after a throughball from Arshavin to Walcott. The England winger had slipped the ball under Vorm and was only denied by Steven Caulker's goal-line clearance.

Although Swansea was mostly on the backfoot in the first half and Arsenal piled on the pressure, the breakthrough came after the gift from Vorm.

The goal also owed much to the vision of Arshavin, who had been a target for critics after the United game.

"Arshavin has a very good spirit, he had lost confidence," Wenger said. "People think sometimes he doesn't care. That is not true at all - he does care. He just lost confidence and you can see that he is himself again."

The advantage provided by the Russian was nearly wiped out 10 minutes into the second half when the Premier League's first Welsh team nearly leveled, but the crossbar kept out Scott Sinclair's well struck free kick.

"Swansea makes it difficult because they keep the ball well and on the flanks they are very quick," Wenger said.

At the other end, Robin van Persie dribbled through the Swansea defense before clipping the post, while Arsenal's Netherlands striker also struck over later in the match.

Van Persie came off with nine minutes to go and replacement Marouane Chamakh was set up by Kieran Gibbs' cross but his connecting header lacked power and was saved by Vorm.

"When you come to place like Emirates you have to stop the flow of play, and we did that," Swansea assistant manager Colin Pascoe said.

Assistants Pascoe and Alan Curtis coached Swansea as manager Brendan Rodgers missed the game following the death of his father.

What Is a NCCA-Accredited Personal Trainer Certification?

These days, there are many different paths you can take to become a personal trainer. However, the most reliable and respected path you can take is to earn a certification from one of the organizations accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). The NCCA was the first institution to offer accreditation in the fitness industry as a means for ensuring the public?s safety, health and welfare. NCCA-accreditation also guarantees that all certified personal trainers will be nationally recognized by most gyms and fitness establishments. For more than 30 years, the NCCA has been a global leader in providing education, networking and advocacy resources to the credentialing community. It?s not surprising, then, that NCAA-accredited personal trainer certifications are the most well-known and widely accepted credentials in the industry. The purpose of this article is to compare the four major providers of NCAA-accredited personal trainer certifications:

American Council on Exercise (ACE)
National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)
American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)
National Strength and Conditioning Association? (NSCA)

Who Are the Top Providers of Personal Trainer Certification Programs?

Every personal trainer certification program has unique benefits to offer participants. In the following section, we?ll discuss the important features and specific details of each of the four fitness organizations mentioned above. For your convenience, we?ve included a well-defined chart below so you can easily compare some of the major similarities and differences between each program.

ACE ? The American Council on Exercise (ACE) is a nonprofit organization that was established back in 1985. As one of the largest fitness certification, education and training organizations in the world, ACE has more than 50,000 certified professionals, and four accredited certification programs: Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor, and two advanced fitness certifications ? the Advanced Health & Fitness Specialist and Lifestyle & Weight Management Coach. To become a personal trainer through ACE, you must be at least 18 years of age and hold an Adult CPR/AED Certificate. Program participants can take the exam in one of two ways: 1) traditional pen and paper method, which costs 9; or 2) computer-based exam, which runs at about 9. Candidates preparing for the ACE personal trainer certification exam are offered a wide range of study materials including free study coach program, manuals, practice tests, study guides, online courses, flashcards, consultations and more. Discounted study bundles are available between 9-9. Exam participants are given three hours to complete 150 questions. Once the individual passes the exam and becomes an ACE-certified personal trainer, he/she must renew their certification every two years by completing 2.0 CECs (20 hours of continuing education) and paying a standard renewal fee of .

]]>

NASM ? The National Academy of Sports Medicine has been around since 1987, and they too offer an official CPT (Certified Personal Trainer) credential. Similar to the ACE personal trainer certification, NASM programs requires participants to be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid CPR/AED Certificate. However, NASM credentials are a bit more costly than other fitness certification programs. Certification packages run anywhere from 9-9, with the exam itself costing about 9. After properly enrolling and preparing for the CPT exam, individuals are allotted 2 hours to complete 120 questions. The price of renewal is also more than other recertification fees (about 0), but the continuing education requirements are the same. Every two years, professionals must complete 2.0 CECs to maintain their personal trainer certification.

ACSM ? Established in 1954, the American College of Sports Medicine offers its own NCAA-accredited personal training certification. To become an ACSM certified personal trainer, you must be at least 18 years of age, and possess both a high school diploma and an adult CPR certificate. The basic CPT program is comparable to other personal trainer certifications in that it qualifies you to train healthy individuals, provide exercise recommendations and make fitness assessments. Test applicants must pay the 9 exam fee and then complete 125-150 questions over the course of 2.5 hours. Unlike the ACE and NASM personal training certifications, ACSM credential programs require fitness professionals to enroll in continuing education courses every three years instead of two.

NSCA ? Founded in 1978, the National Strength and Conditioning Association is an international nonprofit educational association that currently serves nearly 30,000 members across 52 countries. Besides the standard age requirement and essential CPR/AED Certificate, the NCSA insists that all program participants possess a high school diploma (or equivalent). The actual exam is widely viewed as a very difficult test consisting of 140 questions?35 of which are based upon responses to a video presentation. Many believe it would be in their best interests to get hands-on, practical experience prior to taking the exam. After passing the exam, NCSA-certified personal trainers must renew their credentials every three years by earning continuing education credits and paying a recertification fee (approximately 5-0 for members; 5-0 for non-members).

Wiz Khalifa refuses to rest on his laurels. Just six months after the release of his gold major-label debut, Rolling Papers, the "Black and Yellow" MC revealed to MTV News that he has already started work on his follow-up.

"Yeah, I've started working on a next album just to get a feel for where I'm going with it," Wiz told us on the BMI Urban Awards red carpet last month.

" 'No Sleep' is gonna do what it's gonna do," Khalifa said of the fourth and latest single from Rolling Papers. "Hopefully, it takes off; it's been getting a lot of love so far."

As of now, there is still no date or title for the next Wiz album, but fans of the Pittsburgh rap star will get to hear some new music from him later this month when his pal Chevy Woods drops his mixtape The Cookout. "You know me, I'm always working, doing new stuff. I got artists that I'm working on and stuff like that; Chevy is doin' his thing."

The next artist to emerge from the smoked-out spitter's Taylor Gang crew is Chevy Woods. During the past few months, Wiz and Woods have been actively promoting Cookout, the soon-to-be-released Chevy tape that will prominently feature Khalifa as well.

"[Wiz's] gonna be on at least half or more [of the songs]," Chevy told Mixtape Daily in July. "It's my tape, featuring him."

"It's gonna be coming out in early September, so anybody who wants to hear some new raps from me, they can go get that," Wiz confirmed."And, of course, Chevy is gonna kill it and do his thing. It's gonna be real fun."

Are you looking forward to what Chevy and Wiz cook up? Tell us in the comments!

Libya sends envoy to Niger, seeking Gaddafi (Reuters)

BENGHAZI, Libya/AGADEZ, Niger (Reuters) ? Libya's new leaders sent envoys to Niger on Wednesday to try to prevent Muammar Gaddafi and his entourage evading justice by fleeing across a desert frontier toward friendly African states.

"We're asking every country not to accept him. We want these people for justice," Fathi Baja, the head of political affairs for the National Transitional Council, told Reuters in Benghazi, saying the ousted strongman may be close to the Niger or Algerian borders, waiting for an opportunity to slip across.

"He's looking for a chance to leave," Baja said.

Gaddafi's whereabouts remain a mystery. Another senior NTC official said he was tracked this week to an area in the empty Sahara of Libya's south. But in the north, at the besieged loyalist bastion of Bani Walid, yet more officials thought he might still be in the town with two of his sons.

The Pentagon said it knew nothing to indicate the fallen strongman had left Libya. Niger, which took in his security chief this week, insisted Gaddafi had not crossed its border.

Washington said it had also contacted the governments of Niger, Mali, Mauritania, Chad and Burkina Faso -- a swathe of poor former French colonies which benefited from Gaddafi's oil-fueled largesse in Africa. The State Department urged them to secure their borders, detain and disarm Gaddafi officials and confiscate any assets that might have been stolen from Libya.

Gaddafi and his son Saif al-Islam are wanted for crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court in The Hague. British Foreign Secretary William Hague said any country where he was found should hand him over to be tried, remarks that were echoed by U.S. ambassador to Libya Gene Cretz.

With his overthrow, however, have come revelations of the extent to which U.S. and British officials were until recently cooperating with Gaddafi -- once a pariah in the West but rehabilitated by Washington and London in the past decade.

Papers found by Reuters in Tripoli showed a British arm of U.S.-based General Dynamics was modernizing tanks and troop carriers for a feared brigade led by Gaddafi's son Khamis, as recently as January -- after "Arab Spring" protests toppled the president of next-door Tunisia.

"DEALING WITH DICTATORS"

The firm said the military vehicles might have been part of a $135 million 2008 contract with its British subsidiary, part of what it termed at the time "the United Kingdom's initiatives to improve economic, educational and defense links with Libya".

Peter Bouckaert of Human Rights Watch said: "The lesson is that if you are going to sell weapons to dictators, at some point down the line you're going to be deeply embarrassed."

French and Niger military sources have told Reuters that a convoy of 200-250 Libyan army vehicles arrived near the northern Niger city of Agadez on Monday via Algeria, which last week welcomed Gaddafi's wife, daughter and two of his sons.

Niger Justice Minister Marou Amadou said on Wednesday the reports were exaggerated and only a handful of vehicles had crossed.

"We want to inform the world that Gaddafi is not in Niger... He is a former head of state, he will not come incognito into Niger. If he has to come, our government will be informed, and if that happens we will inform you of our decision."

A French military source said Gaddafi might have been preparing to meet up with the convoy in Niger and head for Burkina Faso. That country offered Gaddafi exile on August 24 but says he has not been in contact about seeking refuge.

"GADDAFI A THREAT"

U.S. ambassador Cretz said the 69-year-old fugitive was still a threat while at large: "A Gaddafi free in Libya could pose a continuing danger to the success of the new government to make sure its writ is spread throughout the country."

NATO powers which helped topple Gaddafi have satellites and intelligence resources that could help track fugitives. But Cretz, briefing reporters online, said: "We will participate to the extent that we are asked to, but as of right now it's a question for the Libyan authorities to find Gaddafi."

Among other discoveries in the wake of the Gaddafis' flight, a home video showing the former leader playing with a grand-daughter reveals a mix of playfulness and, possibly, paranoia: "Do you not love me?" he asks, repeatedly, in the film made by his son Saadi and obtained by Reuters.

His six sons and daughter came to form part of a ruling entourage in Libya that was widely despised during the 42 years Gaddafi was in power. On Wednesday, the NTC's chief negotiator at Bani Walid, a tribal stronghold of Gaddafi support 150 km (100 miles) south of Tripoli, said he believed heir-apparent Saif al-Islam and another son, Mutassim, were in the town.

Asked about suggestions that Gaddafi himself might be there, as senior NTC commanders said last week, Abdallah Kanshil said he was checking: "That would explain why Bani Walid is resisting. His two sons are definitely there."

A standoff with NTC fighters outside the town has lasted for days. Outside Bani Walid on Wednesday, residents leaving through a sun-scorched NTC checkpoint at the nearby settlement of Wishtata painted an increasingly desperate picture.

"People are terrorized," said Salah Ali, 39. "But many still support Gaddafi because they were paid by the regime, because many have committed crimes and are afraid of arrest."

Aid agencies have also raised concerns about conditions for civilians in the coastal city of Sirte, Gaddafi's birthplace and another redoubt of tribesmen still loyal to him. Libya's southern desert is also not under the control of the NTC.

Aid agencies and local Tuareg nomads report many black Africans -- some of them possibly former mercenaries for Gaddafi, most just migrant workers -- trying to flee south in fear of attack.

Niger's desert north is a vast area, the size of France, and awash with bandits, rebellious nomads and a growing number of al Qaeda-linked gunmen blamed for deadly kidnappings.

Gaddafi is no stranger, having used his oil wealth to fund development projects and dabble in politics by backing and seeking to mediate an end to various rebellions.

Nevada IHOP shooting 911 tapes released (AP)

CARSON CITY, Nev. ? Dozens of 911 calls made from in and around a Nevada IHOP detail a frantic scene as witnesses tried to describe the shooter and dispatchers try to figure out if more than one person is involved.

The callers describe seeing a man wearing a red shirt and black pants. Many are crying as dispatchers frantically try to gather information on where the shooter went.

Police said when they arrived, the shooter was dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

He was identified as Eduardo Sencion. The rampage killed three members of the Nevada National Guard, a 67-year-old woman and wounded seven others.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) ? Residents of a Nevada's capital city say they woke up Wednesday to a small town that's lost its innocence after a mass shooting in an IHOP restaurant that left four people and the shooter dead and injured seven others.

Just before 9 a.m. Tuesday, gunman Eduardo Sencion stepped onto the Carson City pancake house parking lot from his blue minivan with a yellow "Support Our Troops" sticker on it.

He opened fire, then continued into the restaurant and marched toward a table of uniformed National Guard members before shooting each one, and fatally wounding three of them, authorities said.

Officials released the names of the victims Wednesday as the search for a motive ? and a time of grieving ? continue.

"Our hearts ache for all the victims of this senseless act of violence," IHOP Restaurants President Jean Birch wrote on Facebook after coming to town in the aftermath of the breakfast-time massacre. "The people of Carson City have also shown incredible support for the victims and IHOP's team members."

Killed were Sgt. 1st Class Christian Riege, 38, of Carson City, a fitness buff and father of three who served in Afghanistan from 2009 to 2010; Major Heath Kelly, 35, of Reno, an avid student of military history who served in Iraq from 2004 to 2005; and Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31, who specialized in medicine and dentistry and loved bringing cupcakes to her co-workers.

Also killed was Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67, of South Lake Tahoe.

Brig. Gen. William R. Burks says Guardsmen overseas are being told to maintain focus as they grieve the loss of the service members.

Seven people were wounded in the attack; their injuries range from severe to extremely life-threatening.

"This is unquestionably the most devastating attack in Carson City's history," said Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong. "Yesterday our town was shocked to the core."

Lawmakers, business owners and law enforcement officials in this close-knit, government-driven city of 50,000 struggled to understand what drove Sencion to turn an AK-47 assault rifle on his hometown.

"It's unprecedented in Carson City history," said Guy Rocha, retired Nevada state archivist. "People who live in Carson City have come from other places to get away from the large urban madness. ... It finally came to Carson City.

Authorities are investigating whether the military members were targeted. Furlong said Wednesday it's still unclear whether Sencion was targeting people in the military.

Sencion shot each of the five Nevada National Guard troops sitting together at the back of the restaurant. Another woman was shot and killed.

Family members told investigators that Sencion, 32, was mentally troubled, but he did not have a criminal history. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital hours after the mass shooting.

"The sheriff may never know the motive," Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman Chuck Allen said.

The shooting started just before 9 a.m. roughly two miles from the state Capitol in Carson City.

Sencion stepped out of the minivan and immediately shot a woman near a motorcycle before charging into the chain restaurant. Witnesses said he had unloaded a magazine when he was still less than 12 feet from his car.

The gunfire prompted Ralph Swagler, the owner of a nearby barbecue restaurant, to grab his weapon. But when Sencion started toward him, Swagler backed away.

"I wish I had shot at him when he was going in the IHOP," said Swagler, who owns Locals BBQ & Grill. "But when he came at me, when somebody is pointing an automatic weapon at you ? you can't believe the firepower, the kind of rounds coming out of that weapon."

Sencion struck each of the Guard members in the restaurant in what witnesses described as a seemingly intentional attack. He then exited the restaurant and fired shots toward the barbecue restaurant, shattering the windows. He also fired toward an H&R Block and a casino across the street.

Sencion had shot himself and was lying injured in the parking lot by the time officers arrived. A crowd of reporters and onlookers could see a body on the ground, covered with a white sheet except for the feet, clad in tan boots.

Fran Hunter is a frequent IHOP customer who works in a pet supply store next door but made a last second decision Tuesday to eat at the casino coffee shop across the street.

"It turned out to be a good decision," she told the AP. "If you know the IHOP, they had to be sitting ducks with that long narrow aisle ? if they were at those tables with no way to get out."

Servicemen flocked to a Reno hospital after the shooting, nervously waiting for word on those killed and hurt.

"It's hard to believe something like this would happen to really good people," said Spc. Lee Amato, 33, a Nevada Army National Guard member. "It's like a hole, something taken away. It's mind-boggling and hard to comprehend."

Sgt. 1st class Cameron Anderson, 31, of Reno, was tasked with driving the Guard's chaplain to the hospital.

"You go a whole tour in Afghanistan and no one is shot," Anderson said. "And you go to IHOP and several are shot. It's a shock."

Officials were analyzing the assault rifle to determine whether it is automatic or semi-automatic. Sencion left two more guns in the van ? another rifle and a pistol, authorities said. Furlong said law enforcement agencies are investigating how Sencion got the guns.

The violent outburst rattled Nevada's capital city after the long Labor Day weekend when many officials, including Gov. Brian Sandoval, had left town. Carson City is also a jumping off point 30 miles south of Reno for travelers headed to Lake Tahoe or back to California across the Sierra.

Nevada officials initially feared the worst as news of the shooting spread. The state Capitol and Supreme Court buildings were briefly closed and extra security were sent to guard state and military buildings in northern Nevada to prevent further violence. The IHOP is several miles from the Guard's state headquarters complex.

Sandoval was in Las Vegas when the shooting occurred. He soon returned to the capital, where he was briefed by police and his security adviser.

"Everything is being done to ensure the public's safety," Sandoval said in a statement. He ordered flags to half-staff through Friday night in honor of the killed guardsmen.

Sencion was born in Mexico and had a valid U.S. passport. He worked at a family business in South Lake Tahoe and had no known affiliations with anyone inside the restaurant, Furlong said. He was not in the military.

Sencion filed for bankruptcy protection in January 2009, listing more than $42,000 in outstanding debts for a car, several credit cards and some medical expenses. The case was discharged four months later.

A lawyer representing some of Sencion's family members called the shooting "an aberration of his character."

"He's a gentle, kind man who was very helpful to friends and family," Joe Laub told The Associated Press. "I couldn't venture to guess what would cause him to do something as horrible as this."
