World stocks mostly lower on eurozone worries (AP)

BANGKOK ? World stock markets were mostly lower Thursday, as renewed worries over Europe's banking system and a strong yen weighed on investor sentiment.

Benchmark oil fell below $103 per barrel while the dollar slipped against the yen but rose against the euro.

European stocks drifted downward in early trading. Britain's FTSE 100 fell 0.4 percent to 5,648.36. Germany's DAX lost 0.4 percent to 6,0867.12 while France's CAC-40 shed 0.8 percent at 3,168.16. Wall Street also appeared headed for a lower opening, with Dow Jones industrial futures off 0.5 percent at 12,299 while S&P 500 futures fell 0.6 percent at 1,265.80.

Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.8 percent to close at 8,488.71. South Korea's Kospi index lost 0.1 percent at 1,863.74, while Australia's S&P ASX 200 ceded 1.1 percent at 4,142.70.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 0.5 percent to 18,813.41. Benchmarks in Singapore and Taiwan were also higher.

Mainland China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index lost 1 percent to 2,148.45, its lowest level in almost three years. The Shenzhen Composite Index lost 3.5 percent to 813.99. More than 100 companies plunged to the daily limit of 10 percent.

In Tokyo, the yen's rise against the euro elicited fears of more pain ahead for Japanese exporters. The euro sank to 98.71 yen on Monday in European trading, which Japan's Kyodo News said was an 11-year low. The euro remained under selling pressure as it hovered around 99.30 yen Thursday.

Japanese exporters feeling the pinch include Sony Corp., down 2.2 percent; Nissan Motor Corp., down 1.1 percent; and Ricoh Co. Ltd., off 2.7 percent.

On Wednesday, European markets declined after another increase in Italy's borrowing costs renewed worries about the continent's efforts to restore confidence in its debt-hobbled governments. Additionally, UniCredit ? Italy's biggest bank ? said it would offer stock at a 69 percent discount to raise cash. The size of the discount escalated worries about the state of Europe's banking sector.

Europe's unresolved debt woes are outweighing signs of better growth in the U.S.

"Market sentiment has not changed. It still remains cautious," said Linus Yip, strategist at First Shanghai Securities in Hong Kong. "Volume is still at a low level, which means money is not willingly going into the market."

Big financial institutions in Japan and Australia took hits. Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. fell 1.2 percent, Mizuho Financial Group Inc. was down 0.9 percent and Nomura Holdings Inc. lost 1.6 percent. National Australia Bank Ltd. fell 1.9 percent.

In Australia, investors cashed in after two days of strong gains driven by a jump in metals and oil prices. BHP Billiton, the world's largest mining company, lost 1.1 percent. Uranium miner Paladin Energy fell 2.8 percent and Newcrest Mining dropped 1.7 percent. Energy Resources of Australia Ltd. lost 2.9 percent.

Stocks barely budged in the U.S. The Dow Jones industrial average edged up 0.2 percent to close at 12,418.42. The Dow opened the year Tuesday with a 180-point gain that brought it to its highest level since July.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index inched up less than 0.1 percent to close at 1,277.30. The Nasdaq fell marginally to 2,648.36.

Benchmark oil for February delivery fell 31 cents to $102.91 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 26 cents to end at $103.22 per barrel on the Nymex on Wednesday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2871 from $1.2938 late Wednesday in New York. The dollar slipped to 76.74 yen from 76.75 yen.

Bonnie Raitt preps 1st album in 7 years for April (AP)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? Bonnie Raitt is releasing a new album in 2012, her first in seven years.

"Slipstream," out April 10, follows a long break from studio work for the Grammy-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member. She lost her parents, her brother and her best friend.

"I hadn't stopped moving in a very long time so I really wanted to take a total break and not concentrate on making a new record or what I was going to do next," Raitt said. "So that was really valuable because I waited until I was really ready to come back."

"Slipstream" is the 62-year-old slide guitarist's first album since 2005's "Souls Alike" and will be the first release on her own record label, Redwing Records. The 12-track album will feature four songs recorded with producer Joe Henry and his musicians, which she describes as experimental. The remainder of the album is self-produced with her touring band.

She says she's thrilled with the resulting eclectic mix of blues, rock and soul that even includes a dash of reggae and Celtic sounds. She covers Bob Dylan's "Million Miles" and "Standing in the Doorway," and Loudon Wainwright III's "You Can't Fail Me Now" as well.

"It's just a new batch of great songs," Raitt said.

More US women having twins; rate at 1 in 30 babies

(AP) ? The number of twins born in the U.S. soared over the last three decades, mostly the result of test-tube babies and women waiting to have children until their 30s, when the chances of twins increase.

In 2009, 1 in every 30 babies born in the U.S. was a twin, an astounding increase over the 1 in 53 rate in 1980, according to a government report issued Wednesday.

"When people say it seems like you see more twins nowadays, they're right," said Joyce Martin, an epidemiologist who co-authored the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report.

Some increase was expected as more women are delaying starting a family until they are over 30. For some unknown reason, mothers in their 30s are more likely to have twins than younger or older women. As much as a third of the increase can be attributed to that, Martin said.

The rest of the rise is due to fertility drugs and treatments.

"You have a double whammy going on. There are more older moms and more widespread use of fertility-enhancing therapies," Martin said.

Starting in the early 1980s, couples who had trouble conceiving began to benefit from medical advances like fertility drugs and in vitro fertilization and other procedures. These treatments became fairly widespread in the 1990s but are expensive, and availability and insurance coverage varies.

The twin birth rate rose by more than 2 percent a year, on average, from 1980 through 2004. It leveled off to less than 1 percent annually although the?rise from 2008 to 2009 was nearly 2 percent.

In 2009, twin rates increased in all 50 states, though the jumps were highest in lower New England, New Jersey and Hawaii. In Connecticut, twins now account for nearly 5 percent of births.

That's high. Nationally, 3.3 percent of all births were twins in 2009, up from 2 percent in 1980.

Over the last three decades, rates rose for white, black and Hispanic women, but the increases were not uniform. Rates doubled for whites, rose by half for blacks and by about a third for Hispanics. Historically, black moms have twins most often, but white moms have almost caught up.

"That's changed with infertility treatments," said Barbara Luke, a Michigan State University expert on twin births.

The greatest increase in twin rates was for women 40 and older. They are more likely to use fertility treatments and to have two embryos implanted during in vitro fertilization, whereas younger women are more likely to get just one.

About 7 percent of all births for women 40 and older were twins, compared to 5 percent of women in their late 30s and 2 percent of women age 24 or younger.

While a lot of attention is focused on the impact of fertility treatments, that's not the only factor. Before fertility treatments existed, about 2.5 percent of the babies born to women in their late 30s were twins, compared to under 2 percent for younger and older women. Some research has suggested women in that age group are more likely to produce multiple eggs in a cycle, increasing their chances of twins.

Clearly, there are more older moms. In recent years, more than a third of all births have been to women 30 and older, up from just one-fifth in 1980.

Take Victoria Jacobson. At 31, she gave birth to twin girls last April ? her first children. With no history of twins in her family, and no fertility drugs, it was a big surprise when she found out at six months pregnant.

"I cried, because I'm more of a realist. My husband laughed," said Jacobson, of Glen Ellyn, Ill. "They were not tears of joy. Maybe shock, more than anything."

Still, Jacobson doesn't find the new report on twin births surprising. A good friend had twins four months after Jacobson's girls were born. "I'm stopped at every corner and in every store" by mothers who also have twins, or who know of other twins, she says.

"I never knew how many twins were around until I got twins."

Are more twins good news? Some experts say the trend is worrisome, noting that multiple births are more dangerous for the mother and their babies. The infants tend to be born earlier, smaller and weaker, and require much more care.

Jacobsons' twins arrived a month early and were tiny, about 3 pounds each. They had to be cared for in a hospital intensive care unit, and one needed a ventilator at first to help her breathe.

At 8 months, they are still small, but healthy and doing fine. Still, they don't sleep through the night, and breastfeeding two and getting them on the same schedule hasn't been easy, she said.

Despite the challenges, she has this advice to other moms of twins: Don't "think about it as double trouble. It's still a double blessing."

Shabbir emerges Pakistan Open Golf champion

KARACHI: A view of the DHA Golf and Country Club. file photo

KARACHI?-? The final fourth day of the 41st Pakistan Open Golf Championship produced a run-away victory for Shabbir Iqbal of Islamabad Golf Club, at the admirable and flawless DHA Golf and Country Club Golf Course, on Sunday. Shabbir's three previous rounds personified consistency with scores of 69, 70 and 71 and on the final day he kept up the pressure with controlled play producing a final day?s round of 72 resulting in a three stroke winning aggregate of 282, six under par.

The nearest challenger, Matloob Ahmed of Garrison Club Lahore, did play some brave shots in the final go, and for a few brief spells the element of a close duel did raise its head sparking some exciting flashes, but in the end the moment of glory was certainly not destined to tilt his way and he had to be content with the runners up slot and though this is no mean achievement, Matloob was rather distraught. Others who ended up behind them were Mohammed Munir (Islamabad) and Afsar Ali (Star Com) joint third.

As for Shabbir, the victory brings ample honours and money, but what needs to be emphasised here is that in all four rounds of this competition there was no doubting the thoroughness of Shabbir's approach. "He has shown remarkable ability to avoid error,? said Brig Hassan Rafi of DHA Golf Club. ?And somehow in his quest to that end, noticeable is his temperament which duly complies when victories are required," he added.

And Shabbir stated, "To win constantly, not only must luck be present, but shot making has to reach a pitch of perfection". In his moment of glory, as he got off the green, Taimur Hassan, Honorary Secretary of Pakistan Golf Federation and a legendary champion himself, stepped up, embraced him and complimented him for winning the National Open title a fourth time.

Taimur hoped that Shabbir will take along and serve as a role model for the amateur turned professional golfers like Aadil Jehangir, Daaniyaal Jehangir and Hamza Amin.

The top positions in Professionals section: Shabbir Iqbal (Islamabad) 69+70+71+72=282; Matloob Ahmed (Garrison, Lahore) 71+72+71+71=285; Afsar Ali (Star Com) 73+73+72+73=291; Mohammed Munir (Islamabad) 70+71+77+73=291; Javed Inayat (HBL) 79+68+71+75=293; Shafiq Masih (Gymkhana) 73+75+76+70=294; Anser Mehmood (Islamabad) 72+78+74+73=297; Waheed Baloch (Karachi Golf Club) 75+76+73+73=297; Adil Jehangir (Gymkhana) 76+72+68+82=298; Hamza Amin (Islamabad) 79+68+75+76=298.

Cash prizes were awarded to the top 40 professionals. The amateur section winner was Ali Hai of Karachi Golf Club who emerged as the best amateur beating the seasoned Waseem Rana of DHA Golf Club by a stroke. Ali Hai had a four days aggregate of 306 as against Waseem Rana's 307, followed by Anser Mehmood (Karachi)311, Robin Bagh (Sargodah) 314, Mohammed Rehman (Royal Palm) 317, Taimur Hassan Amin (Islamabad) 318, Saajid Khan (ASCC) 318 and Ghazanfar Mehmood (Rawalpindi) 320.

The senior professionals showed their mettle and after two competitive rounds Asgher Ali (Punjab Police) captured the top position in this category with rounds of 72 and 77 and an aggregate of 149, seven strokes better than the runners up Ghani Khan of Karachi Golf Club. Mohammed Shafiq of Railways came third with a score of 157, followed by Akbar Ali (Gymkhana) 157, and Ghulam Nabi (Gymkhana) 158. At the conclusion of this national event, the prizes were awarded by Lt Gen Zaheer ul Islam, Corps Commander, Karachi. Also present on this occasion was A. Karim Dhedi, President AKD Group, sponsors of this championship.

Fighters like Nelson, Faber and Mir fired up for tonight?s main event at UFC 141

Fighters like Nelson, Faber and Mir fired up for tonight?s main event at UFC 141

LAS VEGAS - It's a special main event if the fighters are jacked up about the possibilities and that was clear yesterday at the MGM Grand Garden Garden Arena.

Set up on the concourse with our show on ESPN1100/98.9 FM in Las Vegas, fighter after fighter stopped by and beamed about tonight's fight between Alistair Overeem and Brock Lesnar (10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT).

Most said it comes down to the fighter that dictates the style of the fight and all of them suggested that there's no way it goes past the second round.

"Different athletes are well-rounded and then there are athletes that are very good at one particular skill set," Roy Nelson told "The MMA Insiders" show with myself, Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole and? fighter/MMA analyst Frank Trigg. "If Brock tries to go in there throwing punches with Alistair, he's gonna lose. If Alistair tries to wrestle with Brock, he's gonna lose. This fight is whoever gets off first."

Outside of the respective camps, Frank Mir probably has the strongest opinion we've heard on the fight. The former UFC heavyweight champ likes Lesnar big and isn't backing off his pick.

"Of all the accolades we can heap on Overeem footwork is not one of them," Mir said. "[...] If he were to land a good shot on Brock he very well could win. But I mean, land a good shot or Brock land his double-leg? What is the higher percentage of what's probably gonna happen?"

Mir also thinks that Lesnar's more comfortable at 266 pounds versus Overeem, who's added the weight over the last four years. That could lead to stamina issues for the Dutchman.

Forrest Griffin says the mystery of the fight will be solved quickly.

"We'll know how the fight's going to go in the first minute," said Griffin. He also pointed that Lesnar's long layoff since Oct. of 2010 could be a factor.

For the last few weeks, Urijah Faber was squarely on the side of Overeem, but now he's 50-50 on the fight.

"The one wild-card in there is that Brock doesn't seem to understand how to take a punch," said Faber.

The featherweight title contender doesn't question Lesnar's chin. It's more about being able to slip, absorb and shake off punches mentally. Trigg and Faber got into an interesting discussion about what needs to be happening in Lesnar's camp.

Faber was quick to point out that Lesnar is a desperate fighter right now and that he will score a takedown at some point in the fight. That's when the ultimate test comes for Overeem.
