Mesothelioma Lung Cancer | Small Cell Lung Cancer

?

Mesothelioma is a notorious and lethal form of cancer whose only known cause is asbestos exposure.? During most of the twentieth century millions of workers were exposed to asbestos insulation, fireproofing, or one of thousands of industrial and commercial products that contained asbestos.? The resilient fibers that make up asbestos are thrown off of asbestos products that are decaying or worn; they can be inadvertently inhaled by someone in the area who is completely unaware of the experience.

?

Inhaled asbestos fibers have inflicted hundreds of thousands of people with one of several diseases.? Asbestosis is a condition caused by scarring of the inner lung tissue resulting in a loss of breathing capacity.? Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that develops in the mesothelium, a membrane that exists in several parts of the body.? The outer lining of the lungs (the pleura) is mesothelium tissue; it is also the most common place for mesothelioma to develop.? For that reason people often mistake mesothelioma for lung cancer, but technically it is not.? Pleural mesothelioma is cancer of the lining of the lungs, often spreading to the similar membrane that lines the chest wall.? Finally, asbestos can be a cause of lung cancer.? It has been linked in particular to small cell lung cancer, a fast moving form of the disease that is just as lethal as mesothelioma.

?

Mesothelioma and the Lungs

?

The sections of the mesothelium that involve the lungs are the visceral pleura, that portion of the membrane that wraps around the lungs to protect them.? The parietal pleura is the membrane that lines the chest wall.? The? space between those two membranes under normal circumstances has a thin film of fluid that lubricates the two surfaces so that the lungs don?t encounter a harsh, dry surface when a person inhales.

?

Pleural mesothelioma is caused by asbestos fibers that work their way through the wall of the lung, from the interior to the outer lining where they are embedded.? Eventually they cause the development of abnormal cells which leads to malignant cells and malignant tissue.? The disease exhibits many of the same symptoms as lung cancer: a persistent dry cough, chest pain, chest pressure, shortness of breath, and weakness.? In many ways it mimics lung cancer during the symptomatic stage.

?

What is Asbestos Lung Cancer?

?

Asbestos can cause malignancy on the inner surface of the lungs as well as in the outer lining.? Smokers who have been exposed to asbestos are particularly susceptible to asbestos lung cancer; in many of the cases it is small cell lung cancer.? However lung cancer exhibits different types of malignant tissue than does mesothelioma.? Asbestos lung cancer causes the growth of one or more large tumors, whereas mesothelioma is a diffuse form of cancer made up of many small malignant nodules scattered across an expanse of tissue.

?

About 15% of all lung cancer cases are small cell lung cancer (SCLC).? This form of the disease is as lethal as mesothelioma.? It is known for its aggressive, fast moving behavior; most cases of the disease aren?t diagnosed until it reaches an advanced stage.? SCLC metastasizes early in development and often doesn?t cause the standard lung cancer symptoms until it is spread throughout the body.

?

Two forms of Asbestos Cancer

?

Mesothelioma rises in the outer lining of the lungs, or in a similar membrane in the abdomen or around the heart.? It is caused by asbestos fibers that are embedded in that tissue; mesothelioma in the chest cavity is generally a diffuse form of malignancy.? Asbestos-caused small cell lung cancer or non-small cell lung cancer cause the larger tumors usually associated with cancer.? Asbestos lung cancer is also much more likely to occur in people who not only inhaled asbestos fibers, but have a history of smoking.

Egyptian military says vote won't be postponed (AP)

CAIRO ? Egypt's military rulers said Thursday that parliamentary elections starting next week will he held on schedule despite spreading unrest.

The military also rejected protesters' demands that it im mediately step down, saying that doing so would amount to a "betrayal" of the people's trust and arguing that the military took over from ousted president Hosni Mubarak by popular demand.

"Let me just say this: There will be no postponement in the election," said Maj. Gen. Mamdouh Shaheen, one of two members of the ruling military council who spoke during a televised news conference. "The elections will be held on time with all of its three stages held on schedule."

The comments suggested that the military council led by Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi has no intention of making more concessions under pressure from tens of thousands of protesters gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square, which was the epicenter of the 18-day uprising that toppled Mubarak nine months ago.

Earlier Thursday, police and protesters agreed to a truce negotiated by Muslim clerics after five days of fierce street battles that have left nearly 40 dead.

Another council member, Maj. Gen. Mukhtar el-Mallah, added that Egyptians must "focus" on the elections, rather than street protests.

Protests demanding that the military rulers step down have spiraled into a week of violence as Egyptian police battled with demonstrators, blanketing the area around Tahrir Square with tear gas.

That has deepened the country's economic and security woes and raised doubts about the ability of the country's interim leaders to hold the first parliamentary elections since Mubarak's regime was toppled. Voting is scheduled to begin on Monday and will be staggered over three months.

El-Mallah insisted the military's immediate resignation would amount to a "betrayal of the trust placed in our hands by the people." He later said the throngs in Tahrir did not represent the whole of Egypt. "We will not relinquish power because of a slogan-chanting crowd ... Being in power is not a blessing. It is a curse. It's a very heavy responsibility."

Marketing Software Giant ExactTarget Re-Files For IPO; Will Raise $100M

exactEmail marketing software giant ExactTarget has just submitted its second S-1 for a public offering, seeking to raise as much as $100 million. In 2007, ExactTarget filed for an initial public offering but delayed its IPO plans and withdrew its application with the SEC to trade on the Nasdaq under the symbol EXTG due to the recession. Clearly, the company has considered the current IPO climate to be more favorable.

Why was Michelle Obama Booed at a NASCAR Race? (ContributorNetwork)

First lady Michelle Obama, along with Vice President Biden's wife Jill Biden, was presented as grand marshals of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Finale in Miami. Obama was booed by some members of the crowd.

While stipulating the NASCAR crowd is hardly part of President Barack Obama's base of support, the unpopularity of an American president rarely translates to his wife. Mrs. Obama enjoyed a 63 percent positive rating in a recent CNN poll, while her husband languishes in the mid-40s.

It would not be too difficult to overanalyze this incident. Sports fans tend to be raucous, especially after they have been well lubricated. It is possible the NASCAR crowd would have booed the Second Coming if it came before the big race.

On the other hand, Mrs. Obama has delved into controversy in her pet cause of getting people to eat healthy. Recently she opined that her favorite meal was steak and arugula. It seemed to be a somewhat Marie Antoinette type of statement. A lot of families in these difficult times are hard pressed to afford hamburger, not to mention steak.

Arugula, a leafy vegetable renowned for its peppery taste, is used in salad and tends to be more expensive than the romaine or iceberg lettuce that is usually in dinner salads. Her statement sounded to some ears like boasting about how well she eats compared to the hoi polloi.

Her campaign against childhood obesity, while well intentioned, is being greeted by many people as an attack on their parenting. A lot of two-income households do not have the time or the energy to cook a traditional family dinner where nutrition can be controlled to a certain extent. In too many homes, home delivered fast food or something that can be nuked quickly in the microwave have become the featured dinner. Harried parents are not likely to take very well someone lecturing them about feeding their children properly, especially if they are eschewing playing at the park for lying about with their game boys.

If one takes the view that the booing was personal, Mrs. Obama as a food Nazi is a good an explanation as ever.

Light Strike Assault Striker D.C.R-012

The holiday season is fast approaching, and again parents are asking themselves, "What should I get my kid?" The Light Strike Assault Striker D.C.R-012 ($39.99 list) is the at-home consumer version of laser tag. It comes with one gun and a plastic orb for target practice?and batteries are not included. Playing with this high-tech toy is fun, but parents be warned if you have no intention of joining in the fire-fight: This toy is noisy.

The Assault Striker D.C.R-012 has a bright sci-fi pattern on the exterior, and from the box image you may think you're getting a dynamically molded gun, but it's just a bunch of stickers on a flat surface, which may leave the gun prone to looking weathered quickly if the stickers start to peel. The gun has a lot of touch-sensitive buttons, the most important one parents and stealth shooters will want to take note of is the volume button. You can't completely mute the gun, but you can install ear buds into the headphone jack to silence the weapon.

Setting up the Assault Striker D.C.R-012 will require a Phillips head screwdriver and four AA batteries for the gun, and three AAA batteries for the Strike Target.

The Laser Strike isn't that heavy, and it's pretty accurate. It has a range of 30 feet, and when I took the orb out for target practice, the further away I went, the more challenging it was to hit the target, which I thought was well within reason. Booting up the gun, requires only to flip a switch and press the "fingerprint reader" touch button. You can have up to 4 players in an all-out deathmatch and up to 4 teams in a team deathmatch. The features on the gun remind me of a certain sci-fi first-person shooter game (Halo). There's a shield button, which halves any damage that you may take when activated, and the built-in health meter tracks how much damage you've taken (the gun also functions as the tag sensor). There's also a weapon selection button that allows you to switch between several "weapon" modes to help you with your strategy?unless you just like to run-and-gun.

Laser: It's the default weapon mode that doesn't offer a lot of firepower, but you'll be able to get your shots off quicker.

Stealth: This option allows you to shoot with the same power and frequency as the Laser Strike, but your shots will be muffled.

Pulse: This mode with use up your ammo faster and has a longer delay between blasts, but it packs a lot more damage per shot.

Rail: This weapon mode offers even more firepower, but also goes through ammo fast and there's a longer delay between shots.

Sonic: This mode is the biggest "weapon" in your arsenal, packing the largest amount of damage, but you'll go through ammo quickly and there's a long delay between blasts.

The Assault Striker D.C.R-012 also has room for expansion options, like the Enemy Scanner, Scope, Rapid Fire System, and Refractor Launch System that may give wealthier children an edge against their competition.

If there are a lot of kids in your neighborhood, this gift is definitely a good buy especially if it's a coordinated effort among the other parents. I had a lot of fun playing with it, running around the office (after work hours) and essentially skeet-shooting with the plastic orb.
